Patzver E Dzaghiner
Reviving Western Armenian Folk Songs
Talin Hajintsi
The Western Armenian musician and dancer Talin Hajintsi grew up in Berlin’s diaspora with the Armenian music of her parents and grandparents, keeping folk songs alive today as a singer, Oud player and occasional Davul player. For her, music is more than sound - it is lived memory, resistance against oppression, and pure collective joy. Driven by this passion, she collects forgotten traditional songs from grandparents and archives them in order to bring them back into the world, among other work with her band project "Hazaran". She is an artist with a deep respect and passion for the history of the songs she sings. She seeks direct dialogue with different families to understand the meaning and cultural context of these old songs. After studying music education, she deepened her musical knowledge by working with renowned Armenian musicians such as Lilit Pipoyan, Hasmik Harutyunyan and Aram Nikoghosyan. Today, she passes on her knowledge and passion for Armenian music and culture not only through performances, but also through singing lessons and song and dance workshops. Her work is powerful, honest, and always at the heart of the community.
In the spirit of preserving and transmitting endangered Armenian sonic traditions, Talin has chosen the folk song Patsver e dzaghigner, which was passed down to her by her grandmother, Alis. Throughout her research, she has not found this song recorded online or remembered by any of her collaborators or community members. To help ensure its continuation, and to reach others who might recognise it, Talin has transcribed, translated and transliterated the lyrics into Latin script, so that even those who cannot read Armenian may learn, sing and continue the transmission of this nearly forgotten folk song. To learn the melody of the song, you can listen to Talin’s singing accompanied by the oud below.
Patsver e dzaghigner, karun e karun
Mi panar im verk’s khorung e khorung
Tun indzi ge nayis odar yari bes
Paits yes gairim kez hamar g’ragi me bes
Yerp koves gantsneir yed’s nayetsa
K’lukh’t var gakhats yes kez ch’jantsa
Yeresit mazere medaks g’nmani
Kamin hov p’che tel tel togh dani (x2)
Patsvere yerginke anush karun e
(...) luise ge zarne
Yerginkin luis ingan gardzes arev e
Ko sirun yeresid aid‘t ge shpde
The flowers have blossomed
The flowers have blossomed, it is spring
Don’t open my wound, it is deep
You look at me like a stranger
But I burn for you like a fire
When you passed by, I looked behind me
With your head down, I didn’t recognise you
Your hair looks like silk
A breeze shall blow the strands of your hair
The sky has opened, it is a sweet spring
(...) the light is shining
The light shines down from the sky, as if it’s the sun
Caressing your sweet face’s cheekbones
